Seaton Elementary School

Whole Child Wellness

“Whole-child wellness is about children having healthy minds and healthy bodies.” – Sesame Workshop

Healthy Bodies

Seaton elementary staff strives to model healthy habits and works to ensure that students eat well, get enough sleep and exercise. Access to parks and playgrounds and quality health providers is also important.

Seaton Elementary was named one of 2016’s healthiest schools in America and awarded gold-level recognition by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Seaton, one of 14 schools given this distinction, and the only one from Washington, D.C., received the highest level of recognition for meeting the strict standards of the alliance’s Healthy Schools program.

Seaton has partnered with several organizations, including SweetGreen, Kaiser Permanente, YMCA, DC SCORES, The Alliance For a Healthier Generation and The Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs to provide enriching nutrition and physical-activity programming for our students and families.

Through these partnerships we have provided:

  • Taste testings of healthy foods
  • Cooking lessons
  • Farm field trips
  • Interactive healthy eating assemblies
  • Physical activity opportunities in classrooms
  • Competitive soccer teams
  • Health screenings and vaccinations
  • Before-school activities, and more

In an effort to promote healthy lifestyles and comply with the DC Healthy
Schools Act, we have implemented Seaton’s Wellness Policy.

Along with the DC Healthy Schools Act and Seaton’s Wellness Policy,

All foods and snacks provided during school must meet the USDA’s Smart Snacks Nutrition Standards. Use this handy calculator:

Please consider bringing healthy snacks for birthday celebrations, such as fruits (whole, sliced, kabobs), popcorn, low-fat yogurt (topped with fresh fruit and granola) or cheese sticks instead of cake or cupcakes.  If you would like more ideas please contact your child’s teacher.

We encourage you to take advantage of the free, healthy breakfast and lunch provided to students at school.  Our meals feature local and culturally inspired foods. Any foods sent to school should be healthy. (No cookies, candy or drinks with added sugar.)

Social-Emotional Health:

At Seaton, we work to integrate Social-emotional learning and health throughout the entire school. Every classroom teacher implements social emotional learning curriculum like Second Step and other in classroom supports like Calm Corners, Token Economies, Behavior trackers, and so. All these tools are use to help promote strong student-staff relationships, positive learning environments, and to help promote the growth of social emotional skills.

Along with that, the Seaton Community is fortunate enough to have a full mental health team consisting of 2 school social workers, 1 school psychologist, 1 community based therapist, and a bilingual school counselor.  This team of individuals call themselves the “Bee Well Team”, which works with the students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders to support the emotional and social well being and development of the Seaton Community.
