Our Commitment To Diversity & Equity
“All oppression—including that of LGBT individuals, refugees, immigrants, Muslims, women, people living in poverty and people with disabilities—negatively affects all lives.“ – learningforjustice.org
At Seaton Elementary School, we embrace diversity by fostering an inclusive environment and by developing students cross-cultural understanding. We believe that it crucial for our students to understand their identities and the world around them. Which is why Seaton has participated in initiatives and programming like Black Lives Matter Week at Schools and Welcoming Schools. On top of this, we have also brought back Multicultural Day in order to ensure that our students and school community have the opportunity to learn about real life equity issues that impact their world and the world around them. Understanding Equity and Diversity is a crucial piece in helping our students grow into scholars. To learn more please click on the different pages below.
Black Lives Matter Week
Every year, Seaton celebrates Black History Month and Black Lives Matter Week at School. The BLM at Seaton Committee plans a spirit week, assemblies, and other events/initiatives to promote the significance the BLM movement and Black History. We also aim to celebrate black excellence locally (in the DMV area) and throughout history (past, present, and future).
Welcoming School
In collaboration with the Human Rights Campaign, Welcoming Schools is a bias-based bullying prevention program to provide LGBTQ-specific training and resources for elementary teachers. Seaton has been working with WS since SY2020-2021 and earned a Seal of Excellence for our work with this program in the spring of 2023!
Multicultural Day
Last year, Seaton brought back its famous Multicultural Day! The Multicultural Committee celebrates the many different cultures represented at Seaton and around the world.
