Late last night, Seaton students waited patiently in their seats at the 20th Annual DC SCORES Poetry Slam to hear who would be taking home the trophy. Check out this video to see their reaction!

The Seaton DC Scores team won first place in the elementary school Golden Mic championship. The team lit up the stage with a riveting and meaningful performance of their poems “Welcome” and “We Demand Social Justice.” (Read them below.) Seaton’s fourth grader, Diamond Goins, was also awarded the Shine Award. This award was for her powerful individual performance of “Soccer’s My Thing.”

Congratulations to our poets and their dedicated coaches. We are so proud of you!

Student Poetry

Welcome

Welcome!

Bienvenidos

Sat sri akal

If you are a poet, enjoy

If you are an athlete, a cheerleader, a compete-er

A fun maker, a lazy maker!, a defeater,

If you are a dragon slayer

Please enjoy what we have to say-er

And if you are a judge

let us show you what we got

We can do everything,

we can do a lot.

Sit back, relax, enjoy the ride

Cause we’re about to blow your mind!

We Demand Social Justice!

We demand

We demand

We demand

social justice!

Racism is death

I’m losing my breath

The color of my skin

Shouldn’t mean my life has to end!

We demand

We demand

We demand

social justice!

Foster kids running away from their horror

All we see is lost kids on the corners

To reach a safe house is what they should get

Why don’t they get any justice yet?!

We demand

We demand

We demand

social justice!

If you have a gun

You could murder someone

Guns and violence are a disease

We need more laws, stop the violence please!

We demand

We demand

We demand

social justice!

If girls and boys combine our power

We can rise up strong like a tower

Girls should have their rights

We should come together and fight!

My heart is beating

I’m coming back to LIFE!

We demand

We demand

We demand

social justice!
